UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights Meets Tibetan Hunger Strikers

Three Tibetans outside of UN headquarters enter 17th day of their water-only fast for human rights, March 9 2012.

United Nations Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights met with the three Tibetan hunger strikers, who are entering their 20th day of water-only fast outside the UN building in New York.
Dorjee Gyalpo, Shingza Rincpohe and Yeshi Tenzing sat on their fast since February 22nd to demand immediate UN intervention in the ongoing crisis inside Tibet.

In addition to a U.N. fact-finding mission, the hunger strikers want China pressured into ending what they call undeclared martial law in Tibet. They also want international media access and the release of all political prisoners.

Ivan Simonovic, UN Assistant Secretary General met with the President of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) on Monday to discuss the current situation inside Tibet and the ongoing hunger strike.

TYC President Tsewang Rinzin told VOA Tibetan that he strongly highlighted the dire situation in Tibet that is leading to self-immolations by Buddhist monks and nuns in his meeting with Simonovic.

Rinzin said Simonovic had agreed to contact UN Secretary General and the UN Human Rights Commissioner to discuss Tibet.
