Tibetan Parliament Elect New Speaker, Deputy Speaker ‎

Newly-elected members of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile on Monday took oath of office from the Chief Justice Commissioner of the Central Tibetan Administration.

Penpa Tsering was re-elected Monday as the speaker and Khenpo Sonam Tenphel was elected as the deputy speaker of the 15th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.

The preliminary voting resulted in a tie between Penpa Tsering and Karma Yeshi with 19 votes each. Penpa Tsering retained his post as the speaker of the 15th Tibetan parliament in exile after two rounds of voting with 22 votes in favor of Penpa Tsering and 19 votes for Karma Yeshi. 1 vote was declared invalid by the Chief Election Commissioner for neutrality.

An estimated 140,000 Tibetans live in exile, about 100,000 of them in India.
