Tibetan Leader In Switzerland To Discuss Compassion, And Economics

The exiled spiritual leader of the Tibetan people is in Switzerland on a five-day long visit to discuss economics and how it relates to the Buddhist concept of compassion.

On Friday, the Dalai Lama attended the opening day of the 20th Mind and Life Conference on Altruism and Compassion in Economic Systems being held in the city of Zurich.

During his remarks at the start of the event, the Dalai Lama pointed out to those in attendance that although he does not know how to make money, he knows it can be useful. He also discussed the origins of the current global economic crisis, and the possible role greed may have played in shaping events.

Earlier in his visit, the Dalai Lama thanked Switzerland for taking in some 4000 Tibetan refugees over the past half-century since a failed uprising forced him and thousands of his countrymen into exile.

The Tibetan leader is not expected to be meeting any Swiss government officials during his visit, which concludes on Sunday.
