Tibetan Govt-in-Exile: China uses Religion for Political Reasons

Tibetan Government in Exile denounced China’s use of “drawing lots from the golden urn procedure” to select Tibetan Buddhist leaders.

Two days ago, Chinese officials recognized Losang Dorje as the sixth incarnation of Gyalrong Dedrug Rinpoche in the presence of the Chinese appointed 11th Panchen Lama, Gyaltsen Norbu.

Venerable Tsering Phuntsok, minister for Tibetan Religious Affairs of the Tibetan government said China’s actions are “politically motivated.” He called for traditional way of selecting reincarnate of Gyalrong Dedrug Rinpoche with the consent of Gaden throne holder, the head of Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

"Recognizing the incarnations of Lamas (Trulkus) is a unique Tibetan practice related with Buddhism. It has nothing to do with politics" said Ven. Phuntsok.

“Tibetans will never accept this,” he added.
