Tenzin Yangkyi Crowned Miss Tibet 2011


19-year old Tenzin Yangkyi from Switzerland was crowned as Miss Tibet 2011 Sunday in Dharamsala.

After winning the Miss Tibet title, Yangkyi, who speaks Tibetan, German, and English fluently, told media that she can draw the attention of international community towards Tibet issue.

Yangkyi, the youngest among the 6 contestants has just completed her high school in Zurich.

Ngodup Dolma, a 25-year-old Tibetan nurse from Australia, was declared the first runners up and another Dolma Tsering, a computer engineer from Infosys was adjudged the second runners up.

Over the years Miss Tibet pageant drew criticism from some sections within the Tibetan society including the Tibetan prime minister Samdhong Rinpoche who said the pageant was ‘un-Tibetan’ and ‘against Buddhist principles’.

The Miss Tibet Pageant celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with six contestants.
