Taiwan's Military Sees Growing Missile Threat

A new report from Taiwan's military says almost 2,000 missiles will be aimed at the island from mainland China by the end of the year.

That is up from current official estimates of 1,300 cruise and ballistic missiles aimed at Taiwan from across a 160-kilometer strait. The report also says a full-scale Chinese attack could destroy 90 percent of Taiwan's infrastructure.

The report appears in a naval studies magazine published by Taiwan's defense ministry, and comes in spite of warming relations between the two sides. Just last month, China and Taiwan signed a trade agreement that will foster the closest contacts in decades.

Speaking in June, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates called the Chinese missile deployment "extraordinary." The United States is selling Taiwan advanced air defense missiles as part of a $6.4 billion contract that has angered Beijing.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
