Chinese “work team” arrested 15-year-old Sidsum and his five friends for writing “Tibet is an independent country” on ice sheet on February 2, 2014.
The boys, all from Trido Township of Sog County, TAR, used sand to write the slogan on the surface of frozen Salween River (or Gyalmo Ngulchu), one of the four most famous rivers in Kham area of Tibet.
Dharamsala based Tibet observer, Ngawang Tharpa, said that he didn’t receive the information about the exact ages of the other five boys, but they were all under the age of 20. Among them were Lhagpa and his younger brother Jamyang Gyamtso; Dorje; Azang, and Margong. Tharpa said they were all taken to Sog County detention center.
Chinese “work team” are consistent of police and officials from many departments who are assigned to stay and carry on patriotic campaigns in towns and rural areas in Tibet. China’s Tibet reported in 2011 over 40,000 officials were sent to different areas in TAR. The beefed up campaign was launched after the new TAR party secretary Chong Quanguo took office.
