Police in Nepal have arrested at least nine Tibetans as part of an increase in security for the 55th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.
Authorities in Kathmandu say they detained five people who were staging a small demonstration outside the Chinese embassy. Four others were taken into custody in other areas of the Nepalese capital.
The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress President, Passang , told VOA's Tibetan service police in Nepal have been out in force to prevent demonstrations.
"The Nepalese Home Ministry have deployed hundreds of police since early morning in Tibetan camps around the Kathmandu Valley. They warned us not to organize protests and remain at home. Tibetan stores were also told to closed and no one can move. So, the situation is like house arrest for Tibetans in Kathmandu."
Exiled Tibetans and their supporters are staging protests in cities around the globe Monday, including gatherings in New York, New Delhi and London.
