15 Arrested in Tanzania Acid Attacks

Tanzanian police say 15 people have been arrested in connection with a string of acid attacks in Zanzibar, including some alleged Islamist radicals.

Last week, a priest was was badly burned in an acid attack, the fifth in Zanizbar in the last ten months. In August, an attacker doused two British women with acid.

Zanzibar's police commissioner, Mussa Ali Mussa, said some of the suspects were youths who wanted to join the Somali militant group al-Shabab.

He told reporters Tuesday the youths were in the process of traveling to join al-Shabab when they were detained. He said they admitted they were seeking involvement in jihad but provided no details.

The Tanzania Daily News said Tuesday that Zanzibar police have begun searching homes and businesses as part of a campaign against the illegal possession of acid.
