Dharamsala Observe 22nd Birthday of Panchen Lama

Tibetans and Tibet supporters around the world on Monday marked the 22nd birthday of the 11th Panchen Lama Gendhun Choekyi Nyima to highlight the continuous detention of 11th Panchen Lama.

To mark the day, five major Tibetan NGOs based in Dharamsala organised signature petitions to call on Zhu Weiqun, the Vice Minister the United Front Works Department, the Chinese government body in charge of talks with the Tibetan envoys on Tibet issue, to disclose whereabouts of the Panchen Lama.

The boy chosen as the faith's second-most influential figure has spent almost two decades in Chinese custody. Gendun Choekyi Nyima and his parents were detained in 1995 after the six-year-old boy was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama. He and his family have not been seen since they were detained by Chinese authorities in 1995..China selected another boy, Gyaltsen Norbu, to be the reincarnated Panchen Lama.
