Dalai Lama Turns 75

Tibetans around the world are celebrating the 75th birthday of the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.

In the Dalai Lama's adopted hometown in India, hundreds of cheering followers gathered for birthday festivities that included a public speech by the spiritual leader.

The speech was also set to be broadcast live to followers abroad on the Dalai Lama's official website.

Hundreds of well-wishers were also expected at a celebration at a refugee camp for exiled Tibetans on the outskirts of Nepal's capital, Katmandu.

Various news reports say some Tibetans have been detained by police in Nepal, or at the border.

Police said they were trying to avoid any anti-China demonstrations, although birthday celebrations would be allowed.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He says he is not seeking independence for Tibet, just greater autonomy. China considers him a separatist.
