Chinese Official Calls for Stronger Fight Against Dalai Lama Influence in Tibet

  • VOA News

A high-ranking Chinese official is calling for a stronger fight against the influence of spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in Tibet.

Jia Qinglin spoke Friday at a meeting in Beijing on Tibet and provinces with large Tibetan populations.

Chinese media did not specify what measures Jia is encouraging officials to take against the Dalai Lama's influence.

But he called for raising the living standards of local populations, especially farmers and nomads.

He said issues related to Buddhism must be handled well and that officials need to improve mechanisms that he says safeguard people's rights and interests.

Tibetans have been struggling to shake off Chinese rule since communist forces invaded the region 60 years ago.

China accuses the Dalai Lama of fomenting anti-Chinese violence in Tibet -- a charge he denies.
