Death Toll Rises in Chinese Factory Blast

At least 12 people are now reported dead in an explosion at an abandoned plastics and chemical factory in eastern China.

State media reported the higher death toll Thursday. Reports said more than 300 people were injured in Wednesday's blast in the city of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province.

An initial investigation found that workers broke a gas pipe while working on the building. Xinhua news agency said the gas apparently ignited when a motorist at the scene started his car.

The blast badly damaged vehicles and buildings within a 100 meter radius, including a passenger bus that was traveling by the plant. Reports said people as far as two kilometers away evacuated their buildings, thinking there had been an earthquake.
