China has revised its Criminal Law to eliminate the death penalty for 13 non-violent economic crimes.
The official Xinhua news agency said the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed the amendment to the Criminal Law Friday at its bi-monthly session.
Xinhua said the amendment also prohibits the death penalty for people aged 75 or older at the time of trial, except if they commit a murder with exceptional cruelty.
China executes more people every year than any other country, and critics say too many crimes are punishable by death.
The change leaves 55 crimes, including corruption, still on the list of crimes punishable by death.
