27 Missing After Chinese Bus Falls Into River

A bus has fallen off a mountainous road and into a river in southwestern Sichuan province Sunday, leaving 27 people missing and feared dead, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Xinhua said 11 people were rescued after the bus drove off a cliff and into Dajin River in the Sichuan province's Aba prefecture, a region largely populated by ethnic Tibetans.

The vehicle was travelling from Aba's Maerkang county to Sichuan's provincial capital Chengdu. It was forced to take a detour due to repairs on the main road connecting Maerkang and Chengdu.

Xinhua initially reported 23 people died in the crash, but later said their fates were unclear.

China's roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with traffic laws widely flouted.
