Authorities say 38 civilians and more than 30 policemen were injured in southwestern China during a weekend protest by residents who feared that a planned railway would bypass their remote community.
The county government of Linshui in Sichuan province said in a statement Monday that more than 100 protesters charged police and burned vehicles on Saturday, and that 40 people were detained. It said 20 more were detained Sunday when crowds gathered again. It wasn't immediately clear if the 60 were held or released.
The demonstrators demanded that the railway go through their town, saying it urgently needs its first rail link. They had heard reports it would take another route.
The county government said Monday the route wasn't decided and that it would take into account the residents' wishes.
