Taiwan to Revise Textbooks to Separate Taiwanese, Chinese History  - 2004-11-11

Taiwan says it will rewrite its high school textbooks to separate the history of the island from that of China.

Currently, the history of Taiwan and mainland China are covered together under what is called "domestic history." In the revised government guidelines, a new textbook will be created that focuses solely on Taiwanese history.

The new book could be ready for distribution as early as 2006. Critics say the change is a sign Taiwan's government is looking to declare formal independence. But Taiwan's education minister says such claims are ridiculous.

China considers Taiwan a renegade province and has threatened to seize the island by force if it moves toward independence.
