Ireland Discusses Tibet on Eve of EU Presidency - 2003-12-26

Ireland, which is preparing to take over the EU Presidency from January 1, 2004, has reaffirmed its concerns on the human rights situation in Tibet during a meeting between Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Tom Kitt and the Dalai Lama's Representative in London, Kelsang Takla on December 18, 2003.

Takla says that the Dalai Lama has requested the appointment of a Special EU Representative for Tibet Affairs. She added that the EU's position on human rights in Tibet will be made much stronger, and its commitment reflected that much more clearly, when the EU appoints a Special Representative for Tibetan Affairs and that the appointment of such a EU Special Representative will be interpreted by the leadership in Beijing as an indication of the seriousness of the EU in facilitating a negotiated settlement of the Tibetan issue.
