Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has told a Japanese newspaper that Tibet wants autonomy, not independence, from China.
In an interview with Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun," the Dalai Lama said China should apply the so-called "one country, two systems" framework it introduced in Hong Kong and Macao to Tibet.
He also accused Beijing of not respecting the political rights and economic status of Tibetans, saying Tibetans are often deprived of economic opportunities.
The Dalai Lama arrived in Tokyo last week for a 12-day trip, at the invitation of Japanese lawmakers. China has denounced the visit.
