China Warns New Zealand on Taiwan and Tibet - 2003-10-28

China has warned the New Zealand government that it must respect China’s internal policies on Taiwan and Tibet if it expects to achieve a closer relationship. Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to an Auckland museum was delayed on Monday as officials tried to figure out how his motorcade could avoid a group of a hundred protestors agitating for Taiwan independence. China last month lodged a protest again Prime Minister Jim Bolger’s meeting with the Dalai Lama last month in Wellington and warned that the country’s relationship with China had been damaged.
