China Plans More demolition of Traditional Tibetan Houses - 2003-09-02


Based on Kate Saunders report and sources in Tibet, reported that the authorities in Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, plan to demolish the larger part of the remaining village of Shol at the foot of the Potala Palace to make way for a square and a museum. The World Heritage Committee, which monitors the implementation of the UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, has expressed concern regarding the demolition. Tibetan sources say that the Tibetans are “very concerned and modernization should not destroy priceless traditional houses.”
