Howard Urged to Encourage China for Talks with Dalai Lama on Tibet - 2003-08-18

Australian Prime Minister has arrived in Beijing for a three-day visit to meet the new Chinese leaders and to discuss the strengthening of economic ties and the North Korean nuclear crisis. Earlier, the Australian Parliamentary Group for Tibet wrote to Mr. Howard to actively encourage the Chinese Government to begin substantive dialogue on Tibet during his China visit. The decision was taken during a special session of the Group during which the Representative of the Dalai Lama was invited to brief them on the status of Tibet-China contact. Representatives of Green, Democratic and Labor Parties attended the parliamentary meeting. Several Australian organizations, including Tibet support groups and the Tibetan community, have urged the Australian Government to take up the Tibetan issue during the Prime Minister’s China visit.
