Tibetans All Over the World Celebrate the Dalai Lama’s Birthday - 2003-07-08

Tibetan stringers from Dharmsala, Delhi, Gangtok, Bylakuppe,India; Katmandu, Nepal; Paris, France; filed reports on the celebrations of the Dalai Lama's 68th birthday. The most eventful celebration took place in Katmandu, Nepal. Nepalese police abandoned to enforce a ban on Tibetan celebrations of the Dalai Lama’s birthday in Katmandu Sunday amid cheers and revelry after hundreds of Tibetans defied the government order and gathered at the stupa in Boudha to burn incense and chant songs in honor of the Tibetan leader. Tibetan women, many in tears, argued with police and after about 30 minutes of high tension, eventually persuaded them not to break up the celebrations.
