US Backlash Hits Npeal's Exports After Its Deportation of 18 Tibetans to China - 2003-07-03

Nepal's ailing economy was further hit after a Bill in the US Senate, aimed at providing Nepal's garment exporters a larger share of the American market, was withdrawn after Nepalese authorities deported 18 Tibetan asylum-seekers. The Bill would have provided a fillip to Nepal's battered economy by granting duty-free status to textile and apparel exports to the US for a two-year period beginning October 1, 2003. The US are Nepal's largest markets for readymade garments. Eversine, Sen. Feinstein took the action, Nepal seems to have softened its stand on the Tibetans. It has recently handed over a batch of 19 Tibetan refugees to the UNHCR and has given Tibetans in Nepal to observe the Birthday of the Dalai Lama on July 6, 2003,an action unthinkable of till recent.
