Tibet Support Groups Urge Indian PM to Raise Tibet Issue with China - 2003-06-19

Tibetans are more optimistic about the upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s visit to China. Tibet support groups are appealing to him to bring up the issue of Tibet when he meets with the Chinese leaders and also not to support any Chinese crackdown on peaceful Tibetan efforts for their rights in the name of fighting terrorism. The president of the Tibetan Youth Congress, Mr. Kalsang Phuntsok Godrukpa said, “We earnestly appeal to the Prime Minister not to endorse China’s efforts under the guise of the war against terrorism to contain and suppress non-violent struggle for freedom and self-determination in Tibet by our fellow Tibetans. Do not endorse Beijing’s sovereignty over Tibet. Do not endorse the militarization of Tibet. Do not endorse Beijing’s policy of restricting the freedom [of movement] of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan refugees living in India.”
