India and China May Start Border Trade in Ladakh - 2003-06-19

According to the Times of India and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Indian and Chinese authorities are discussing ways to soften their border in Kashmir in order to boost the local trade and open another road to Kailash Mansarovar, a Hindu pilgrimage site situated in Tibet. Currently the Indians take the route from Pithoragarh in Uttaranchal State and the arduous journey takes 18 days. However, according to the Times of India, the pilgrimage is expected to be discussed during the Vajpayee visit since India seeks a shorter, less hazardous, route from Leh, Ladakh.
