China Detains Four Tibetans in Kham, Eastern Tibet - 2003-06-03

Tibetan stringer Tsering Migmar reported that Chinese authorities have detained four Tibetans, including three monks, in a row over construction at a monastery in Kartze, Tibet. The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy said the four were taken away by officers of the Public Security Bureau on May 27 for their alleged role in a confrontation at the Sertha Buddhist Institute last year. The group said that that several people were injured December 26 in a scuffle there between Chinese authorities and nuns and monks protesting an attempt to destroy huts housing nuns near the institute.
