The Dalai Lama met Friday with Germany's foreign minister Mr. Fischer and Parliamentary President Wolfgang Thierse before the start of a landmark conference of Germany's Protestant and Roman Catholic churches. He later addressed thousands of conference participants, calling for international peace.
China has voiced objections over Friday's meeting in Berlin between Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and senior German officials. but a German government spokesman said that during the talks Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer reaffirmed Berlin's support of the policy, saying Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China.
The spokesman said Mr. Fischer also told the Dalai Lama that Germany supports Tibetan demands for religious and cultural autonomy.
