UN Concern over Lhasa Demolitions - 2003-04-10

Based on the reports of Geneva Bureau of the Office of Tibet, and TIN, and an interview with Ngawang Chophel of the Geneva Tibet Bureau, who attended the UN Human Rights sessions, reported that the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing has called for a dialog with Chinese authorities on the demolition of historic buildings and housing complexes in Lhasa. The Tibet Information Network reported that the authorities in Lhasa have demolished even a building complex under UNESCO protection in the traditional Tibetan area close to the Jokhang Temple, the historic center of the city.
