Taiwan Leader Tones Down Aide’s Controversial Remarks on Flag, Title - 2002-11-13

Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian on Tuesday tried to calm an uproar sparked by his chief aide’s remarks that the territory’s title and flag could be altered if necessary. The president’s chief secretary Chen Shih-meng annoyed opposition parliamentarians Monday when he said Taiwan’s official title, the Republic of China, and flag did not have the same status as the territory itself and could be changed if necessary.
