A boy selected by the Dalai Lama to fill Tibet’s second highest Buddhist position and subsequently placed under house arrest by China is “very happy,” Beijing appointed Deputy Communist Party Secretary for Tibet Raidi said Tuesday.
Raidi who is in Beijing to attend the Party Congress, he spoke to reporters in Beijing on the sidelines of the Communist Party Congress, “Not long ago, I sent people to visit his family. He is now living a very happy life.”
The Dalai Lama identified the youth in 1995 as the reincarnation of the former Panchen Lama, who died in 1989.
Soon after Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was named, Chinese authorities placed him and his family under house arrest. Beijing then selected its own candidate, after saying the Dalai Lama's choice was announced without official approval.
The youth chosen by China, Gyancain Norbu, made an appearance at the opening of the Communist Party Congress earlier this week.
