Italian Parliamentary Delegation Meets with Dalai Lama - 2002-09-30

A group of Italian lawmakers met with the Dalai Lama on Friday to discuss a resolution calling for official Italian recognition of his exiled government. The lawmakers said they wanted the Italian government to recognize the Dalai Lama’s exiled government as the legitimate government of Tibet if Beijing does not grant full autonomy to the region. The lawmakers plan to introduce a resolution in Italy’s Parliament in October that calls for a resumption of dialogue leading to direct negotiations on the status of Tibet and respect for the fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people.
