Chinese 'Godmother' of Organized Crime Sentenced to Prison བོད་སྐད།

A court in southwestern China has sentenced a woman called the "godmother" of an organized crime gang to 18 years in prison for running underground casinos and bribing government officials.

State media said the ruling Tuesday in the trial of 46-year-old Xie Caiping was part of a months-long crackdown on the underworld in the city of Chongqing.

Court officials said 21 others were sentenced to between one and 13 years in prison.

Xie is the sister-in-law of a prominent law enforcement official in the city, who is at the center of the crackdown.

Since the Chongqing gangster trials started, six people have been sentenced to death.
