China: Tibetan tour guide Sentenced to Three Years' Imprisonment  བོད་སྐད།

A 32-year-old Tibetan tour guide working in Yunnan has been sentenced to three years in prison for sending emails and cell phone messages to tourists he befriended following Tibetan protests last March.

Joshua Rosenzweig, Hong Kong office director for the US-based Dui Hua Foundation, tells VOA that a friend of Gonpo Tserang, the Tibetan guide, provided the Foundation with court documents which described Gonpo Tserang’s messages sent between March 16th and 18th of last year to six foreigners as acts of inciting splittism.

Rosenzweig says as far as they know, Tserang was a well-known guide who had never been involved with the pro-Tibet independence movement; the harsh sentence, he says, reflects the authorities’ determination to block information from coming out of China, particularly Tibet.
