Two Chinese lawyers say they were recently detained and beaten by police while visiting the family of a man who died under questionable circumstances at a labor camp in China.
Zhang Kai and Li Chunfu say they were meeting with the family of Jiang Xiqing in the western city of Chongqing when more than two dozen police officers entered their home and beat them.
The lawyers say that the two were taken afterward to a police station where they were interrogated before being released.
They say police warned them to not represent the family. The two lawyers say they will not drop the case and that they plan to file charges against their attackers.
Zhang Kai says that Jiang Xiqing died earlier this year, allegedly from a heart attack. But Jiang's body showed signs of broken ribs and beating.
Human Rights in China says Jiang was jailed last year for being a follower of the Falun Gong spiritual group.
The Falun Gong has been outlawed by China as an evil cult. China has viewed the group as serious threat to stability ever since more than 10,000 followers surrounded Communist Party headquarters in central Beijing in 1999 in a demonstration against a crackdown on the group.
