China Angered by Italian Award for Dalai Lama བོད་སྐད།

China warned Tuesday of possible damage to ties with Italy after the city of Rome granted honorary citizenship to the Dalai Lama.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters that Italy should pay attention to China's concerns and take measures to immediately eliminate the negative impact on bilateral relations.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno honored the Dalai Lama Monday for his commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the problems of Tibet and for reaffirming human rights principles worldwide.

The exiled Tibetan leader said he is committed to three things -- promoting the value of the human individual, promoting inter-religious harmony and resolving the cause of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama said his faith in the Chinese government has been diminishing since the crackdown on Tibetan protesters in March. But, he said his faith in the Chinese people remains constant, as more and more intellectuals show support for the Tibetan cause.

China has long accused the Dalai Lama of leading a campaign to split Tibet from the rest of the country. But the Dalai Lama says he is only seeking greater autonomy for the region to protect its unique Buddhist culture.
