Reporters Without Borders says men hired by local Chinese officials assaulted and robbed a Belgian television crew reporting on the AIDS epidemic.
The media rights group Monday the assault took place November 27th when Belgian journalist Tom Van de Weghe and his team were traveling to a village in central China's Henan province. The Paris-based group said the Belgian television crew was scheduled to meet with several local organizations that care for AIDS patients.
About a dozen attackers allegedly beat the film crew and took their interview tapes, as well as money and equipment. The crew's employer, a Flemish-language public broadcaster, has demanded an apology and compensation from Chinese authorities.
Reporters Without Borders reported the incident Monday as Chinese media broadcast images of leaders observing World AIDS Day.
