British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in Beijing for the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games, has met with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
China's official Xinhua news agency said Mr. Brown praised the success of the Beijing Olympics and the Chinese athletes when he greeted President Hu Friday in the Chinese capital.
Mr. Brown said the Beijing games captured the imagination of the entire global community, and that Beijing set a standard London will try to follow when it hosts the games in 2012.
The British leader came under pressure from rights activists to boycott the Beijing games because of China's human rights record. British officials said the prime minister would use his Beijing visit to raise human rights, but it was not immediately clear if he brought up the topic in his talks with Mr. Hu.
