France, Europe Raise Human Rights Issue with China

France and Germany have expressed concern about human rights in China as the Olympic games open in Beijing.

French officials say President Nicholas Sarkozy presented Chinese officials with lists of political prisoners the European Union and human rights organizations wish to highlight.

France currently holds the rotating EU presidency.

French human right groups and opposition lawmakers had criticized Sarkozy for traveling to Beijing for the games.

Germany's human rights commissioner Guenter Nooke says the Olympic games have done nothing to improve the human rights situation in China. He says the government has arrested dissidents ahead of the games to silence them.

Nooke says social conditions may have improved because of the games and the booming Chinese economy, but China must do more to open up society.
