Thousands of Tibetan exiles have staged protests in Nepal and India, to bring attention to their homeland on the eve of the Beijing Olympic Games.
More than two-thousand protesters, including Buddhist monks and nuns, clashed with police in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, Thursday. Authorities detained more than 500 people. Demonstrators say they want to draw global attention to the Chinese crackdown in Tibet before the games open Friday in Beijing.
In neighboring India, heavily-armed security personnel guarded the Chinese embassy in the capital, New Delhi, as several thousand Tibetan exiles marched nearby. Several hundred protesters also demonstrated in the northern town of Dharamsala, the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
Tibetan exiles have been holding regular demonstrations against the Chinese government since March, when deadly clashes broke out between protesters and Chinese authorities in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
The U.S.-based group Human Rights Watch has accused China of pressuring Nepal to crack down on the Tibetan protests. Beijing denies the charge.
