Pro-Tibet Demonstrations Resume in Nepal; 28 Detained

Police in Nepal say they have detained at least 28 pro-Tibet activists in Kathmandu, in the first anti-China protest in several weeks.

The activists detained Tuesday were calling for a free Tibet at a demonstration outside a Chinese visa office in the capital.

A police officer said the protesters will be released later.

One of the activists told the French news agency that the near-daily demonstrations that started in March were halted for a few weeks out of respect for victims of the earthquake in China's Sichuan province May 12th.

Nepal, which regards Tibet as part of China, is home to some 20-thousand Tibetan refugees. The latest round of demonstrations were prompted by clashes in March in Tibet between protesters and Chinese authorities.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
