Would-be Everest Climber Stopped for Pro-Tibet Banner བོད་སྐད།

Nepalese authorities have stopped a would-be climber of Mount Everest because they found a pro-Tibet banner in his bag.

Officials said Wednesday the climber was a U.S. citizen but did not identify him by name.

Nepal has banned any pro-Tibet action by climbers attempting to scale the world's highest peak, which straddles the border between Nepal and China.

China, host of this year's Olympic Games, plans an attempt for the Olympic torch to be taken to the top of Mount Everest in the coming weeks. The worldwide torch relay has sparked a number of demonstrations against China's crackdown on unrest in Tibet.

The planned route for the torch has been closed to other climbers.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
