Protest Against Nepal Fuel Price Increase Paralyzes Capital

Hundreds of students burned tires and brought traffic to a halt Tuesday in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, protesting a government increase in fuel prices.

Officials in Nepal say police clashed with the students as they rallied against a decision to raise the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas by up to 20 percent. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

State-run Nepal Oil Corporation has raised the price of fuel twice in the past three months, citing the rapid rise of international oil prices.

The Indian Oil Corporation is the sole supplier of oil to Nepal. There have been shortages in supplies to Nepal in recent months as the landlocked country struggles to pay off its bills to Indian Oil.
