An altercation between a Han Chinese shop owner and Tibetan monks in rural Tibet escalated into an ethnic riot. The riot began after three monks from the Baiga Monastery in Tibet's Naqchu district got in to a scuffle with the shop owner. When police arrested the monks, but not the shop owner, anger flared. Hundreds of herdsmen came to the police station and demanded the monks must be released. When their demands were ignored, the riot started and the authorities called in 800 paramilitaries and sealed off the area.
