Exile Group Says Tibetan Dissident Charged with Subversion

An India-based Tibetan human rights group says Chinese authorities have charged a Tibetan activist with subversion for calling for the return from exile of the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy says Runggye Adak was charged October 29th.

Adak had been detained in the town of Lithang in Sichuan province, an area heavily populated by Tibetans, after publicly calling for the return of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. He made his remarks on August first at an annual horse racing event.

The Dalai Lama has called for meaningful autonomy within China for the Tibetan people. Beijing accuses him of seeking independence for Tibet.
