Amdo Kumbum Monastery has Become a Commercial Complex

Amdo Kumbum monastery, one of the largest monasteries in the Amdo area, has virtually converted into commercial complex with restaurants, shops and hotels. The business operators are mainly Chinese, mostly female. Since Aja Rinpoche, the abbot of the monastery, left the monastery in 1998, the monastery went down the hill. The monastery suffered academically and administratively. After 1998, senior monks left the monastery. Now most of the monks speak Chinese rather than Tibetan. Since the monastery has become a center of attraction for tourists, there are more than 400 Chinese tour guides in the monastery.
