Taiwan's China Negotiator is New Premier

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has appointed the island's top China negotiator as the new premier.

The president announced Chang Chun-hsiung's appointment Monday.

Mr. Chang has previously served as premier and has most recently been the chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation, a semi-official organization in charge of negotiations with China.

Mr. Chang replaces Su Tseng-chang who announced his resignation Saturday. Mr. Su had lost the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's primary for the 2008 presidential election to former Premier Frank Hsieh a week ago.

President Chen must step down next year after completing his second four-year term.
