UN Monitors Set to Begin Disarming Work in Nepal

U.N. monitors in Nepal are to begin overseeing the disarming of Maoist rebels next week, as part of a peace deal between Maoist guerrillas and the government.

The top U.N. envoy in the region, Ian Martin, told reporters in Kathmandu Friday that the monitors are preparing to start registering weapons from January 15.

He said two teams of monitors will start work - one from Kathmandu and the other from Nepalgunj, some 500 kilometers west of the capital.

Under a recent peace deal with the government, Nepal's rebels are to form part of an interim government and take part in elections set for next year.

The peace deal also calls on rebel fighters to lay down their weapons and enter camps that are supervised by the United Nations.
