Dalai Lama's Special Envoy Urges China to Reconcile on Tibet

The Dalai Lama's special envoy to the United States has reacted with disappointment to recent statements by Chinese officials criticizing the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Lodi Gyari told VOA he is surprised by the harsh tone of the Chinese statements, especially in light of ongoing discussions between representatives of the Dalai Lama and the government in Beijing. Mr. Gyari has led the Tibetan team to some of those discussions.

Last week, Tibet's Chinese-appointed leader, Champa Phuntsok, said no substantial progress has been made in the talks. He accused the Dalai Lama of trying to disguise an intent to gain independence for Tibet.

The Dalai Lama has repeatedly said he wants real autonomy for Tibet, and is not seeking independence. Mr. Gyari urged Beijing to seek a true reconciliation with the Tibetan spiritual leader.
