TAR Official Says No Progress in Talks on Region's Future

Tibet's Chinese-appointed leader says no substantial progress has been made in talks between the Chinese government and representatives of Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama on the future of Tibet.

Champa Phuntsok said in a rare news conference Tuesday that the Dalai Lama is trying to disguise his intent to gain independence for Tibet. Champa Phuntsok was speaking in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital.

The Dalai Lama went into exile in India in 1959 after a failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule. He has said he only wants real autonomy for his homeland.

But after several rounds of talks, Beijing says the Dalai Lama is not sincere.

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, for his non-violent struggle to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the Tibetan people.
